2022 Flower & Garden Show

2022 Bacchus Marsh Garden & Flower Show was on this weekend, not far from home. It has been a while since this community event has been able to be held. Like all the pinup events, everyone is slowly coming out of their homes again.

My car hobbled through the old council car park filled with the last week’s heavy rains. Stepping out of the car, the smell of mud and humidity filled the air. I grabbed my camera and headed back to the main street. Between the RSL hall and the community was the first stall of plants. The member of the Melton Botanic Garden passionately ran me through many of the community propagated plants. People of all ages and cultural backgrounds strolled around with arm fulls of new plants.

Some photos from this year’s garden & flower show

I lined up to paid my $5 admission, and promptly, they tried to upsell facemasks and raffle tickets. 3 for $5 ‘just for you’ has been a running Rotary gag for some time—legends in fundraising. The hall was filled with plants, arrangements and artworks. Stunning roses and native flowers were everywhere. I might have had a chance if mine had opened in time. On the stage, “Rockabilly Caroline” from the local radio station was live to air. Behind a small crowd of people were browsing the small photo competition. It was great to run into some familiar faces for a quick chat. I even saw a cow, but I didn’t speak to her. It was great to see ‘community’ alive again. People were smiling and enjoying the outing.

I have been part of this community for over ten years. The population has changed a lot in that time. The 65+population is higher than the state average. Those living in the older part enjoy more extensive gardens, some with older European trees and plenty of space for a veggie garden. The online social media garden groups are popular with people sharing plants, advice and frustrations.

The Horticulture Show was launched back in 2014 by a small group of locals. In the past, the show was a fundraiser for the Bacchus Marsh Aquatic Centre Consortium, which were trying to fund a new local pool. With state funding, the pool will soon be achieved. The show has continued to grow year after year. In 2018, it expanded to hold very successful cake decorating and photography competitions ( I didn’t realise this until it was too later).
